Wednesday was the filing deadline for candidates in many of this year’s suburban primary elections in Cuyahoga County.

East Cleveland may be the site of one of the more contested races this year. Five Democrats have filed petitions to challenge Mayor Brandon King in the September partisan primary. Another filed with the Green Party.

Three people filed to run for mayor in Solon, and two in Bay Village. Both cities have open mayoral seats this time around.

Brook Park Mayor Tom Coyne filed as a Republican, but faces no primary challengers. Councilwoman Jan Powers filed to run as a Democrat. Two independents turned in their petitions for the November general election.

Of cities with deadlines of June 14, no candidates filed to challenge the mayors of Garfield Heights, Rocky River or North Olmsted.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections still must verify many contenders’ petition signatures.

Cleveland’s mayoral and council candidates have until June 29 to turn in their petitions.
