The City of Cleveland is adding $8 million to its demolition program this year, an addition may be coming just as the county cuts off spending on removing blighted properties countywide.
In Cuyahoga County’s proposed budget for 2018 and 2019, the county plans to withhold $17 million they had planned to spend on demolitions over the next two years.
Over at city council on Monday, housing director, Ayonna Donald, was holding out hope that a 6th round of funding from the county for demolitions could still be coming.
“I have received mixed messaging regarding whether or not there will be a round six. I am pushing my staff to submit a round six, just to see what the response from the county will be," said Donald.
As of last week, 5,000 structures in Cleveland were on the demolition list. The $5 million from city council will be added to a program created this year to remove blighted properties near schools in Cleveland.
