A coalition of local activist groups backed by the Cleveland NAACP branch are demanding the release of transcripts from the grand jury that decided not to indict the two officers involved in the death of 12-year old Tamir Rice.
The coalition is also requesting the removal of Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty from his position. McGinty presented the case to the grand jury and on Monday, announced that he recommended that they not charge the two officers involved in the November 2014 case.
Michael Nelson is president of the Cleveland NAACP and a criminal defense attorney. He says the coalition has already filed a motion with a county judge to release the transcripts.
"Let’s look at the whole transcript to see how he presented this case to the Grand Jury,” Nelson said.
Throughout the case, Prosecutor McGinty publicly released videos and other reports that he presented to the grand jury in an effort to provide more transparency in the investigation.
The group is also asking for the Mayor’s office to review how the city handles arbitration with the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association.
