Kasich Ends Union Rights For State-Contracted Care Workers

Governor John Kasich has pulled back two orders issued by his predecessor that allowed state-contracted home health care and child care workers to unionize. Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler reports.

Republican Governor John Kasich said in a statement said that the two executive orders he rescinded allowed independent child care and in home health care workers to get access to health insurance as part of collective bargaining agreements with the state.

But Kasich said since they were signed by Democratic Governor Ted Strickland in 2007, health insurance has become widely available through the Affordable Care Act and his Medicaid expansion.

The Service Employees International Union District 1199 said in a statement the rescinding of the orders comes at a volatile and uncertain time for providers because of what President Becky Williams called "radical moves by Gov. Kasich." And she added that the action "shows that John Kasich will stop at nothing to take away the voice of working people, no matter the cost."
