The county-supported health system announced back in mid-November that Dr. John Brennan, President and CEO of Newark Beth lsrael Medical Center and the Children's Hospital of New Jersey, had accepted the post and would begin January first.

Metrohealth says Brennan has now decided to remain at his current job, citing expanded job responsibilities there and personal considerations that have just surfaced.

Board Chairman Ron Fountain says he was informed of the decision Wednesday. He says the news was a surprise, and a big disappointment. He says Brennan broke his contractual agreement, and Metrohealth may seek recompense.

Fountain: "I haven't had that discussion with General Counsel for the hospital, which I will have in the next day or so. You know, the hospital has put a lot of time and a lot of energy and some expense in this process, and we need to look at what our options are to recover some of that."

Brennan's contract included a $685,000 salary - about $135,000 more than that of current CEO Mark Moran, who announced late last year that he would be leaving. It's not known who will take the helm after he leaves the post at the end of December. Fountain says trustees will meet soon to consider their options. In the meantime, he says, Metrohealth is in good financial shape, and he's confidant that another suitable candidate for the post will surface.
