Northeast Ohio Early Voting Up From 2008

At this point in the 2008 election, 7,663 people had voted in person in Cuyahoga County. So far this year, there have been 9,046.

Jane Platten, is director of the county board of elections. She says people are more likely to know about early voting this election.

PLATTEN: "The campaigns have really aggressively advertised early voting, and also, early voting is much more well-known and popular as it was in 2008."

That pattern also plays out in some neighboring counties. Medina saw an increase from 1,076 in-person votes at this point four years ago to 1,790 this year. And Lake County's in-person tally rose from more than 632 to 1,003.

Platten says Cuyahoga is also on target to match 2008 returns on early mail-in votes. On Oct. 10, the board received 35,000 completed ballots in the mail.

PLATTEN: "You know, I saw an email this morning that said we had 142 trays of mail come in, and I thought, 'Oh, that's a lot of ballots.'"

There are fewer days of early in-person voting this time around, because -- in 2012 -- early voting is confined to weekdays.
