Ohio House Speaker Addresses Calls To Halt Syrian Refugees

Ohio House Speaker Rep. Cliff Rosenberger (Statehouse Bureau)

A day after Ohio House Republicans agreed to tell the president that they want to stop accepting refugees from Syria, the House speaker says the goal is more a pause in process. Statehouse reporter Andy Chow explains.

House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger of Clarksville said the federal government isn’t doing enough to thoroughly investigate each refugee coming into the country from Syria.

Rosenberger said spurring the feds to improve their screenings is important for everyone involved.

Rosenberger: “This is an effort to protect those who are refugees that are truly coming into our country -- not to be used by terrorist organizations like ISIS.”

The House passed a resolution telling the president to stop letting displaced Syrians into the country, an idea Republican presidential candidate Gov. John Kasich also supports. The speaker said this is a timeout so the feds can make a better system.
