Ohio Won't Join Lawsuit Over Transgender Bathroom Rules

Attorney General Mike DeWine (Statehouse Bureau)

Ohio’s Attorney General is telling the federal government to back off when it comes to its order that transgender students use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identities. Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler reports.

Mike DeWine wrote a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, telling her the federal government does not have authority to set rules for restrooms in schools and facilities that receive federal funds.

But DeWine spokesman Dan Tierney says the state won’t join 11 other states in suing.

“This letter is a different tack on that. Often we will provide comment to decisions by the federal government, and if we disagree with those decisions, we hope that they change them.”

DeWine’s letter says it’s up to the state and local communities to determine rules on restrooms, and that the rules the proposed by the Obama administration are politically motivated and heavy handed
