Push Towards CAFE Standards Keeps Steel's Momentum Rolling

The push for a more fuel efficient vehicle presses on, with the steel industry playing a significant role here in Cleveland.

Eric Hauge is general manager at ArcelorMittal.  He says the Obama Administration’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards means auto makers need to raise their cars’ average mileage to nearly 55 miles per gallon by 2025.

Hauge says one approach is for U.S. auto makers to make their vehicles lighter.

“But nobody wants to give up safety standards, so advanced, high-strength steel has been developed here to first give a car, make it lighter for fuel efficiency," says Hauge.

"But the steel we’re making today can be 4 or 5 times stronger than the steel that was made a few years ago.”

Price tracker GasBuddy.com says fuel prices this summer will likely stay under $3 a gallon.
