Testing Water Quality on Lake Erie's Beaches

With Memorial Day weekend just around the corner, many people may be thinking of hitting up our local beaches, and perhaps taking a plunge.

This week, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District resumed its daily water quality testing at popular swimming spots such as Edgewater and Villa Angela Beaches. The beaches are part of 8 total in our region that will be monitored throughout the summer for high bacteria levels, which can cause people to get sick.

Mark Citriglia is with the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District and says people can check the Ohio Nowcast website for a daily update on water quality conditions at their favorite beaches.
"The water quality right now for Edgewater is under advisory which means you probably shouldn't swim, but Villa Angela beach is good," said Citriglia.

Sewage and animal waste are the main ways bad bacteria get into Lake Erie and cause poor swimming conditions.
