Uncertainty in Healthcare Policy Likely to Continue in 2018

First responders in Parma prepare Narcan kits to save overdose victims
First responders in Parma prepare Narcan kits to save overdose victims

2017 was a year of great uncertainty for healthcare providers, insurers and the insured.

And that uncertainty is likely to continue into 2018, now that Republicans in Congress passed a tax overhaul plan that repeals the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that most individuals have health insurance.

Ideastream host Amy Eddings and health reporter Marlene Harris-Taylor reflect on the year in health policy, and how the conversation in Washington, DC played out in Ohio.

Eddings and Harris-Taylor also discuss how Medicaid expansion enabled many people to get treatment for opioid addiction in 2017, but the latest statistics in this ongoing health crisis from the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner are grim.

Are there any signs that we are winning the battle against addiction? Harris-Taylor shares how Northeast Ohio first responders used the overdose antidote, Narcan, in record numbers in 2017 in the quest to save lives.
