The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is celebrating the arrival of a new resident. A male giraffe calf was born Sunday -- already standing more than six feet tall and weighing about 160 pounds. The zoo is now home to five Masai giraffes. Globally, the giraffe population has declined during the past 15 years, now estimated to be less than 80,000. In Africa, the population has decreased by nearly 40 percent, which makes conservation efforts for giraffes and their wildlife counterparts all the more important.
Chris Kuhar, executive director of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, joined host Rick Jackson to discuss the conservation work being done by the zoo here in Cleveland -- and on the international scale.
