NewsDepth Inbox: Season 49 - Episode #5

This week we learned about various accommodations for the visually impaired, including braille signs, special track meets and mobile apps. Write to us about how your school or community accommodates people with disabilities.

Alana, Bath Elementary:  At Bath, nobody gets excluded. Mr. Fry, our principal does a great job of accommodating children with disabilities . We have ramps for wheelchairs, and just like normal kids, they can have a lot of  fun too. There are also disability awareness assemblies.

Nick, Elmhurst Elementary:  My school helps people with disabilities in many ways. They put braille on the room numbers, bathrooms and offices. They also help special people by having a classroom for them and their needs. They even give them special work for what they can and can't do.

Meghan, St. Peter School:  My community helps out by having ramps in some places for wheelchairs and we have doctors you can see. Also we have wheelchairs that are robotic in stores for people who have trouble walking or are in a wheelchair. We also have service animals for people that cant see, hear, and other things. Our school helps people with disabilities by having a fold out ramp on the back stairs for a wheelchair, and we have bouncy chairs for kids to help them concentrate. We also have squeeze toys for kids who play with there hands. Also we have teachers that take kids out of class to help kids stay on track in their class.

Miranda, Rushwood Elementary:  At my school we have braille to help people to know ware they are. If they have a wheelchair someone can help them like a teacher. We have rails for wheelchairs to go were they want to go.

Jharna, Lake Cable Elementary:  Our school does have a program that helps children with disabilities it is called ''Bear tracks''. We treat this program as a class, making an assigned classroom for these kids. I think this makes it easier to locate and go there. I think this a very great program and we should continue these school traditions in further years. I also think this has just made all the kids feel very positive about themselves.
