Spanish Court Stops Catalonia Independence Bid

There was a celebration and then disappointment in the Spanish region of Catalonia this week.

Not long after these pictures of people cheering for Catalonian President Artur Mas, who decreed the citizens could vote on independence from Spain, the federal government said that the referendum - or vote - is unconstitutional, and could not be held.

That dispute could set the stage for political confrontation and protests. Catalonians were spurred to seek independence by the efforts of people in Scotland, which we told you about last week.

Catalonia is only one of 17 Spanish regions, but it represents about 20% of all the money that is made in Spain.
