Students March For Gun Regulations, And Mike Gibbons Chats About His Campaign For U.S. Senate

Hundreds of thousands of high school students from around the country marched for increased gun regulations last weekend – including thousands of kids, parents and activists in Ohio.  Students from Lakewood High School near Cleveland were among the kids who went to Washington to participate in the national March For Our Lives. Many of them had never been to a protest before. Gabe Kramer from ideastream rode along with them to find our why they went.

Among those at the marches were petition gatherers still getting signatures for a fall ballot issue on Congressional redistricting. They’re with the citizens groups that worked with state lawmakers on a deal that will be before voters in May. That ballot issue was endorsed by the Ohio Republican Party’s state central committee this week – the Ohio Democratic Party endorsed it last month. But the citizens groups, including the League of Women Voters and Common Cause Ohio, say they’re still working just in case the issue fails in May, and then they’ll take their similar plan to voters in November.

President Trump was in Ohio this week – stopping in Richfield for his first public appearance since the “60 Minutes” interview with adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who detailed an affair that Trump has denied. He was in Ohio to talk about his plan to use $200 billion in federal money to spur at least $1.5 trillion in spending on infrastructure. He unveiled it in February, but it’s stalled in Congress.

The Trump factor will be huge in this year’s election in Ohio.  Last week, we wrapped up a series of conversations with the six major candidates for governor. You can check out the interviews in our archive at statenews.org. For the next two weeks, before early voting begins on April 10, we’ll talk to the two major Republican candidates in the primary for US Senate. This week – Mike Gibbons.
