University Of Akron To Raise Tuition in 2018

Students who enroll at the University of Akron in the Fall of 2018 will pay more for their education after a Wednesday vote by the Board of Trustees.

The incoming class will see a 6 percent increase in tuition, certain fees and room and board, according to a university press release. Students in subsequent classes will also pay the increased rate plus inflation, or about 2 percent.

Although Ohio lawmakers prohibited the state’s colleges and universities from increasing tuition in the  two-year budget approved this summer, a 2013 law allows higher education institutions to create tuition guarantee programs.

The programs allow for an up to 6 percent, one-time increase that must then be frozen, or guaranteed, for the affected class’s four years of school.

A full-time student who is an Ohio resident, taking between 12 and 18 credit hours, paid $4,960.08 in tuition and fees this year at the University of Akron. For nonresidents, tuition and fees totaled $9,225.72

The University of Akron joins four other Ohio institutions that have used the tuition guarantee program. Youngstown State University announced its program’s approval in October, following Ohio University, Ohio State, and Miami University of Ohio.
