Lorain City Schools will spend the next month testing pilot programs that the district CEO says will help get the academically distressed district back on track.

Lorain schools CEO David Hardy Jr. has assembled five task force teams to pilot a number of programs that could be rolled out district-wide in the fall.

One of the programs is a parent university. Lorain will test the wrap around services provided by the university with a small group this spring before implementing it on a larger scale.

The pilot phase will last four weeks, through April 15, then groups will take an additional month to review their successes and make recommendations.

Hardy isn’t concerned about the tight timeline.

"At that point, we’re still going to be making some course corrections," he said, "and hopefully they’re small tweaks rather than major redirections, but nonetheless, we still have from May all the way through the summer to make sure it’s just right.”

Hardy said he’s consistently been told by Lorain teachers that in the past, information about new programs wasn’t shared with them before the start of a new school year.

This pilot process, he said, will change that.
