1889 premiere of Massenet's opera Esclarmonde by the Opéra-Comique at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris; the composer’s most ambitious work for the stage and his most Wagnerian in style and scope.

1931 Donald Martino – American composer (d.2005); won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1974 for his chamber work Notturno.

1959 Andrew Litton – American conductor (57 years old); Conductor Laureate of the Bournemouth Symphony, and Music Director Emeritus of the Dallas Symphony.

1970 Jeremy Denk – American pianist (46 years old); won a 2013 MacArthur Fellowship, the 2014 Avery Fisher Prize, and Musical America’s 2014 Instrumentalist of the Year award; at the 2014 Ojai Music Festival, was Music Director, performer, and librettist of The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts).

1971 premiere of Benjamin Britten’s opera Owen Wingrave as a telecast on BBC-TV in England and NET (National Educational Television) in the United States.
