Cuyahoga County Law Director Robert Triozzi has resigned, according to a news release from County Executive Armond Budish’s administration.
Triozzi will go on to work in higher education with a focus on justice reform, the release says. The release does not specify where he will be working.
“Bob has been a tremendous support to me and my leadership—working tirelessly to help us navigate through the complexities of our daily work,” Budish said in a written statement. “His work within our community to move our key strategic priority of criminal justice reform has been invaluable.”
Triozzi leaves office as county prosecutors continue an investigation that has sought numerous records from officials in the Budish administration. Grand jury subpoenas have asked for emails and documents related to IT contracts and the county jail.
A December 2018 grand jury subpoena requested copies of any opinions Triozzi wrote on whether county employees had a conflict of interest in having travel expenses paid by outside vendors.
As law director, Triozzi has worked on bail reform issues for several years, taking part in meetings with judges and other officials.
“I’ve been exploring an exciting and meaningful opportunity in higher education in the area of criminal justice that now needs my full-time attention to put it in place,” Triozzi said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my law career and am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as Law Director for Cuyahoga County.”
Triozzi previously served as law director for the city of Cleveland under Mayor Frank Jackson. He has also served as a judge in Cleveland Municipal Court, ran for mayor in 2005 and unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for county prosecutor in 2012.
