Students Use Music Festival as Learning Opportunity

By Elizabeth Miller

Students at a local all-girls school spent the past semester helping to plan a music festival that will take place this weekend.  Ideastream’s Elizabeth Miller has more on what the students learned in the process.

Under the guidance of event promoter Elevation Group, 37 Laurel School students learned about the music industry and how to stage events.  LaureLive Executive Producer Denny Young said the class of high school students included several seniors.

"Those 9 seniors did their senior project with Elevation and got a deeper immersion into all that we do and all that goes into staging an event of this size," said Young.

In the classroom, Young says students learned about marketing and artist relations but also how to plan for medical and weather-related scenarios.  The project influenced at least one senior’s career aspirations.

"We went around the room and asked everybody what they wanted to do and a young lady, she didn’t miss a beat," said Young.

"She said I want to do this.  This is exactly what I want to do."

Young says the venue, Laurel School’s Butler campus, is prepared for seven-thousand attendees each day of the festival
