A Plus: HomieSchooler App

This week our A-Plus goes to a pair of start-up sisters who have also been thinking of way that technology can help them at school.

Maya and Nina Serna created an app for homeschooled high school students.

It’s called ‘HomieSchooler.’ The app makes it easier for home-schooled students to track how much time they spend on different subjects, which is something all home schoolers are required to document.

Maya, in 11 th grade, and Nina, in 8 th, said they used to keep records on graph paper. But they didn’t always remember to include everything they did when it came time to write it down.

And, they knew they weren’t the only students with this problem. So two years ago they decided to come up with a better solution by designing an app that makes record-keeping easy and always at their fingertips.

Now while both girls can code, they don’t have quite enough experience to develop a full application just yet, so they are working with professional developers who can turn their ideas into a working app.

So far there is a free version, as well as a premium version that can generate an official transcript, and they’ve had interest from homeschoolers across the country.

Maya and Nina say their advice for other kids interested in starting a business is to make the time for it, even if it’s hard. And they also say not to expect everything to go quickly.  “You just have to keep working at it.”

Well that’s great advice, and such a cool idea! The Homie Schooler app also tracks grades, so today Maya and Nina can add an A-Plus from NewsDepth!
