A Plus: North Royalton High School Recognizes 'Quiet' Art Through Inkwell Magazine

READ THE SCRIPT:

Well, speaking of A Plus, we still have this week’s to hand out, right?

When you think of “art” in school, you might think of singing in a choir or playing an instrument in the band. But this week’s NewsDepth A Plus Award goes to a school that recognizes some of the “quieter” arts like photography and poetry.

North Royalton High School students have a chance to get their work published in the school’s “Inkwell” magazine.  The publication features student artwork, writing and photos. This year’s issue was more than 90 pages long and featured more than 100 student pieces!

Any students at the school can submit their work to Inkwell in the fall. Creative writing students then select the pieces that will be featured in the magazine.

Aside from getting their creative projects published, students can also win awards. A panel of English teachers select poetry prizes and artwork for the cover of the magazine.

The 2019 edition of Inkwell was unveiled at a celebration in December. Students presented their work in front of family members, friends and staff.

Senior Kate Brierley won the poetry prize. She says “Through Inkwell, I saw the world through the eyes of someone other than myself and I witnessed the varying talents of my fellow students. But I also got to share parts of myself and my thoughts through poetry and pictures.”

And student Alyssa Barbeck says “Writing, and photography, and other forms of art aren't really recognized, but Inkwell shines the much-needed light on those artists.”

Congrats to all who were published in Inkwell! We’re excited to award our NewsDepth A Plus to North Royalton High School for appreciating the ‘quieter’ forms of art.
