A Plus: Our Lady of the Elms Sixth Grade

Day of Service
Day of Service

Lots of you have big hearts. Let's check out this week's A-plus.

We've got a throw back to a big day of volunteering, this is on October 24th. The sixth grade students at Our Lady of the Elms in Akron, divided into groups that spread out around the city for a day of service.

One group visited Habitat for Humanity, where they worked in a garden harvesting root vegetables, weeding and planting bulbs. While another group spent their day putting together mailings and cleaning the sanctuary at a local church.

These students were at the Salvation Army, where they hauled loads of trash and recycling to outdoor bins and then sharpened hundreds of pencils and sorted office supplies. Yet another group lent a hand at the Akron-Canton Food Bank, where they packed 673 meals, which equals 808 pounds of food. That's a lot of packing!

And finally, some students made cards for residents of a homeless mission, which inspired them to hold a collection drive for socks and underwear, the two most needed items, in the week following their day of service.

Now Language Arts and Social Studies teacher, Anne Suntken, told us, "They worked hard, but they were happy to be giving back to their community."

Clearly, these young ladies did a lot of good, which extended even beyond that one day and that is why we are giving them this week's NewsDepth A-plus!
