Libraries, parks, and playgrounds are shared public spaces that comprise what is known as "social infrastructure." In these spaces, social bonds are built as people interact. New York Univeristy sociologist Eric Klinenberg says social infrastructure playes a critical but underappreciated role in modern societies. Can we find a common sense of purpose in these common spaces? Klinenberg wrote "Palaces for the People," this year's selection for the county-wide "One Community Reads." We'll talk about social infrastructure and its potential to improve society. Later, strategies for combatting hate and extremism from an international expert in that field, Farah Pandith.
