Kent State Joins Ohio Universities Hiking Tuition

Members of the Kent State University Board of Trustees voted Wednesday to increase tuition for students who enroll at the school in the Fall of 2018.

The University of Akron and Youngstown State University announced over the past several weeks they would take similar action.

Despite a tuition freeze mandated by the state’s current budget, the three universities are able to increase costs for the incoming class through legislation approved by lawmakers in 2013.

The law allows for the creation of tuition guarantee programs. Under these programs, universities can increase tuition and certain fees by as much as 6 percent one time. That rate, however, cannot go up for the class over their four years at the institution, and rates for subsequent classes can only be increased by inflation, about 2 percent.

In a written statement, Kent State’s Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration Mark Polatajko said the tuition guarantee programs give parents and students “peace of mind” when it comes to financial planning for college.

Kent State students who are Ohio residents paid $10,012 in tuition and fees for the 2017-2018 school year, according to the university. Out-of-state tuition and fees totaled $18,544.

Ohio State, Ohio University and Miami University of Ohio have also initiated similar programs since the law took effect.
